The quintessential neighborhood bar with a great vibe (they call themselves "the best half-assed bar around"). There is also a small but tasty food menu that includes their Pimento Cheese Bacon Burger and Madelyn's Pimento Cheese Sampler (it's the South--you can't have too much pimento cheese!). The front deck with a view of street is pooch-friendly. Dead Mule actually is a club, with a $5 membership fee. Best $5 you'll ever spend! Open daily 3 p.m. t o 2 a.m.

Historic no frills local bar located underneath famed Franklin Sreet with cave-like walls, pool, beer only, great live music, with friendly folks their dogs. Once your pet has been, he can become an official "cavedog" and have his picture posted on website. Yearly (mid-late August) get- togethers with 2 or 3 neighboring bars for aweekend festival of music/food/beverages is called "Sleazefest." Dog cookies available at the bar.

Serving up Southern classics with a twist, the Weathervane has one of the prettiest dog-friendly patios we have ever seen, brick and tree-lined, with a wonderful secluded atmosphere. Our favorites on the menu include Sweet Tea-Glazed Salmon, Fried Green Tomatoes and Okra with Smoky Ranch Dressing, and Ashe County Pimento Cheese Fritters. Open Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m
