The impressive Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay in Redding crosses the Sacramento River and is the starting point for a myriad of dog-friendly roadways that make up the Sacramento River Trail. The glass-plated pedestrian bridge ("pedestrian" in this case means friendly for walkers, joggers, dogs on leashes, cyclists walking their bikes and an occasional Segway) opened to the public on July 4, 2004, providing this Northern California city with its own spectacular, functional work of art, which brings in visitors from around the world. The steel, glass and granite span was designed by world-renowned Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava and is his first free-standing bridge in the United States. The Sundial Bridge (yes, it does have a sundial at one end) was created to be environmentally sensitive to the river setting, which includes a salmon-spawning habitat. Each end of the bridge has a small path which leads to a waterfront plaza that people and dogs alike enjoy.
